On January 1, 2025, two separate terrorist attacks shocked the United States, occurring in New Orleans and Las Vegas.
New Orleans Attack:
In the early hours, 42-year-old Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove a rented Ford F-150 Lightning into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street, resulting in 14 deaths and 35 injuries. Inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS), Jabbar had also planted homemade bombs filled with nails and a rare explosive compound along the street, intending to cause further devastation. Fortunately, these devices failed to detonate. Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police shortly after the attack.
Las Vegas Explosion:
Later that morning, 37-year-old Green Beret Matthew Livelsberger parked a Tesla Cybertruck loaded with gas canisters and fireworks outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. After shooting himself, the vehicle exploded, killing Livelsberger and injuring seven others. Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential terrorist attack, noting Livelsberger’s writings expressed political grievances and support for extreme measures against current U.S. leadership.
Investigations and Connections:
Both perpetrators had military backgrounds and had served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, though at different times. Despite these similarities, the FBI has found no definitive link between the two attacks. The incidents have raised concerns about security measures and the potential for coordinated extremist actions.
